Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, refused to meet with representatives of a coalition of Russian LGBT organizations during his Sochi visit, offering a meeting in Lausanne instead. LGBT activists in Russia see this decision as yet another indicator that the Sochi Olympics are far from being a platform to uphold and promote the Olympic values.

Maria Kozlovskaya, lawyer of the Russian LGBT Network, was attacked at the court house in Saint Petersburg. Area 201 justice’s court has investigated today the case of an attack against LGBT activists on 12 June 2012. A young man with his face covered with a scarf assaulted Maria by throwing chicken eggs at her. Two eggs hit her head. Such provocations already took place during sittings at the court house some time ago. Hate acts near the court house ceased after the judge’s reprimand to the accused. As evidenced by the released video of the accident, the act was planned by the 'backup team' of the accused.

In the afternoon September 6, the US President Barack Obama met with Russian human rights defenders in St. Petersburg. This meeting was held as part of the US President’s visit to Russia for G20 summit. Mr Igor Kochetkov, Chair of the Russian LGBT Network, participated in this meeting with the US head.

In light of the recently enacted Russian law on ‘propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors’ that renders illegal statements and actions that acknowledge LGBT equality and in response to the growing violence against LGBT people and allies in Russia, the upcoming Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Sochi have already become a subject of an international debate both over the impact of this context on the athletes, spectators, staff, and volunteers of the Games and over compliance of the Sochi Games with the Olympic values of diversity and non-discrimination.

On May 31st - June 1st, 2013 a conference “Protecting Children from Homophobia and Transphobia” will be held in St. Petersburg by Parents’ Movement and Alliance of Straights for LGBT Equality, supported by the Russian LGBT Network. The two-day conference will be dedicated to Children’s Day, which is observed on June 1st.

On Sunday, March 31st 2013, activists of the Russian LGBT Network will hold one-person actions at the central square of Syktyvkar (capital city of the Republic of Komi, North-Western region of Russia). One-person picket is a special type of a street action in Russia which does not require permission of the authorities.
