The Russian LGBT Network call to boycott censored version of Rocketman

Russian film company Central Partnership cut gay sex and kisses and some drug related scenes from the biopic Rocketman with Elton John. They also cut the final subtitles and introduced new ones, silencing the fact that Elton John has a husband and children. The Russian LGBT Network is appalled by this act of censorship and calls to boycott the censored version.

As it became known after the private view for journalists, Russian film company Central Partnership cut gay sex and kisses and some drug related scenes from the biopic Rocketman with Elton John. Moreover, they deleted the final subtitles and introduced new ones, silencing the fact that Elton John has a husband and children.

Later the Ministry of Culture stated that they did not provide any recommendations on this film, so the film company cut around 20 minutes on they own initiative. Justifying their actions, the Central Partnership stated that they tried to comply with Russian legislation.

We do not know what the reason to cut those 20 minutes was; was it homophobic attitude of Central Partnership or simply “overprotection”. However, we consider it an outrageous act of censorship and call to boycott the censored version of the biopic.

Probably, while making decision the Central Partnership considered the so-called “propaganda law”, which is not relevant in this case (in Russia Rocketman marked “18+”). However, we believe that this act of censorship is the direct consequence of this “propaganda law” and homophobic policies introduced by the authorities.
