On 6 and 7 August 2016 Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Russian LGBT Sport Federation carried a tourist meeting Star Rally on the bank of the river Linda.
The program of the meeting, attended by about 35 people, included sports and recreational activities, tournaments, beach football and volleyball, workshops and trainings.
Next to the tent camp other tourists were camping, LGBT-symbols were not used. Among the participants of the meeting were guests from Moscow, including activists of the "Alliance for heterosexuals and LGBT equality."
At the end of the first day participants gathered around the campfire with a guitar. Around 11 pm there was an armed attack on the camp. From 5 to 8 people, armed with sticks, started hitting the windows of the participants’ cars left near the tents. Several people were subjected to physical violence and got serious injuries. All these actions were accompanied by homophobic insults.
The attack injured three people. Many of the participants suffered heavy material losses: four vehicles were smashed, several tents were cut and torn down, many personal belongings, money and documents were stolen, some of them are scattered in the forest.
The police, called to the scene, worked for more than six hours. Reports were drawn up and evidence with attackers’ fingerprints were collected.
During 2016 3 regional activities of the Russian LGBT Sports was thwarted: Winter Festival in St. Petersburg; Siberian Athens Festival in Tomsk, touristic event Star Rally in Nizhny Novgorod.
Pressing on the LGBT community in Russia is increasing. In addition to administrative pressure an unpunished wave of aggression and outright robbery by inadequately-minded part of the Russian society goes on.
